The Jones County Sheriff’s Department arrested an Ovett man Tuesday evening in connection with manufacturing methamphetamine. Sheriff Alex Hodge identified the man as Aaron Landrum, 33, of Royal Avenue in Ovett.
Deputies arrived at Landrum’s residence Tuesday around 5 p.m. following up on a tip from the public about possible drug activity at the residence.
“Upon arriving on the scene, investigators noticed the smell of burning chemicals coming from the residence,” Hodge said.
The sheriff said Landrum consented to a search and said investigators found approximately one gram of meth in Landrum’s pocket and six chemicals used as precursors to manufacture meth.
“The chemicals used to manufacture meth are very dangerous and have been known to cause fires,” Hodge said. “Many people are unaware that they are living near a meth lab. The equipment used for a lab can be small enough to fit in a duffel bag, a cardboard box or the trunk of a car. I encourage all citizens of Jones County to be aware of suspicious activity in your neighborhood as well as the smell of burning chemicals.”
Landrum is charged with possession of a controlled substance (meth) and possession of two or more precursors with intent to manufacture while in possession of a firearm. He was booked in the Jones County Adult Detention Center, where he was awaiting a bond hearing.
