JCJC sees personnel changes

Chancellor, Welch, Wansley taking on new roles

Several employees at Jones County Junior College are currently moving into new positions.

Sherry Chancellor, Teresa Welch and Shawn Wansley are each moving to new offices and taking on new tasks.

Welch, who has worked at Jones for 18 years, most of those with the athletic department, has been named the administrative assistant to college president Dr. Jesse Smith. Said Welch of her move, “I’m sad but also excited. I’ve been with everyone in the P.E. Building for so long that I feel like I’m leaving my family. I’m excited about the opportunity that Dr. Smith has given me. I appreciate Dr. Smith allowing me to enter this new position.”

Wansley will move his office to the P.E. Building and will continue to serve as Sports Information Director but will also take on additional duties as Assistant to the Athletic Director. Because he is so closely involved with athletics in his current position, Wansley said that he feels the additional duties will be a comfortable fit.

“I am excited about the opportunity to learn more about the athletic department here at Jones,” he said. “I will continue my duties with public relations and look forward to working more closely with Athletic Director Katie Herrington.”

Chancellor is leaving the president’s office for a newly created position, Student Information Specialist, which will allow her the opportunity to greet and help all the students entering the Library and Student Success Center area.

Chancellor feels the position is a natural fit for her for many reasons. First, as the mother of a son in college, she said she understands the challenges students face when entering college and can empathize with them.

Second, in her position in the president’s office, she often worked with students, parents and community members who had questions and needed help getting connected to the right people on campus who could best help them. Chancellor has developed a rapport with the departments and divisions on campus, and she has learned the workings of the college system. At the Student Success Center, she will use those combined skills to help all students who come to her.

“When students get the least bit frustrated, they can drop out of college,” she said. “My goal is to keep that from happening. Retention is my focus.”

Now that she can concentrate on students on a full-time basis, she can develop the same friendly rapport with them as she has with Jones employees, hopefully reaching students before they become frustrated with college demands.

“I hope to educate students on how to understand the college process. They can use this understanding if they move to a senior college as well,” she said.

While in the president’s office, Chancellor worked with hundreds of students and built beneficial relationships with many who have crossed her path. Many who have left Jones still stop by to update her on their career or education progress.

“I love working with the students,” Chancellor said. “I can’t wait to work with them on a full time basis. I’ve always enjoyed watching their progress and making sure they succeed in their plans.”

Said Student Success Center Director Gwen Magee, “The Student Success Center’s goal is to offer a high support system for incoming college students so they can reach their fullest potential while at Jones. Sherry is a perfect fit for that goal, as she is personal, has a service-minded attitude and believes in putting the needs of our students first. We are very happy to welcome Sherry to our department.”
