Jasper County reaps benefits of drug forfeiture

DA’s Office, Smith Co. SO each receive $10,000 donation

BAY SPRINGS — The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved a request by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department to donate forfeited funds to agencies in the area working to help the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department in the fight against crime.

Upon the recommendation of Jasper County Sheriff Kenneth Cross, the supervisors approved donating over $21,000 to state agencies working to combat crime in the area.

Cross said the Sheriff’s Department collected more than $100,000 during 2009. According to the law, Cross said, the sheriff’s department has now donated 20 percent of those funds to agencies that assist them in the fight against crime.

“These are funds that we (the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department) have seized or they have been forfeited in various cases,” the sheriff explained. “The law requires us to disburse 20 percent of those funds to a state agency. So, we are just following the law regarding these funds. We selected the district attorney’s office and Smith County Sheriff’s Department.”

Cross said both of these agencies assist the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department.

“We decided to give the (13th Circuit Court) District Attorney’s Office $10,508 because the D.A.’s Office handles all of the paperwork regarding these cases for us,” the sheriff said. “We decided to give the other $10,508 to the Smith County Sheriff’s Department because they work with us on several cases.”

Cross said the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department had a good year in 2009.

“It was a big year based on the amount seized,” the sheriff said. “I would say that having more than $100,000 in forfeiture money is a large amount for Jasper County.”

In December, the Jasper County Sheriff Department arrested the alleged leader of a major drug operation in Jasper County.

Frontrell Myers, 36, of the Louin community and his mother, Ruby Myers, were arrested after officers found a large amount of drugs (marijuana and cocaine), several stolen items and a large quantity of money at their Louin residences.

Cross said thousands of dollars, chain saws, guns, a stolen John Deere Gator, vehicles and drugs — estimated at approximately $1 million — were seized in the search of two houses on County Road 168 east of Louin in Jasper County.

The sheriff said the investigation yielded the largest drug bust in Jasper County history involving a residence.

Cross said since their arrests, the Myers have been released from jail on bonds.
