Win Win Global’s National Recording Artist X2’s recent visit from Los Angeles, Calif., to Laurel is part of the Laurel School District’s dropout prevention efforts.
X2 and officials with Win Win Global spoke to the students at Laurel High School about the importance of an education.
Along with singing several of his hits — including “Ready, Set, Go” — the recording artist X2 told the students about the importance of staying in school.
X2 said his message to young people is that education is important.
From growing up in High Point, N.C., and overcoming many obstacles, X2 told the young people his story.
“I’ve been through a lot, but I overcame it all,” he said. “You need education to make it. Without education, you would really be lost.”
X2 said his goal is to inspire young people to achieve their dreams.
“I’m trying to change lives through my music,” he said. “I want young people to realize that all you have to do is put your mind to something and you can do it. ... Believe in your dreams.”
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maggie Griffin, who is in charge of curriculum for the Laurel School District, said the recent event is one of several activities sponsored by the Laurel School District’s Dropout Prevention Department.
In November 2008, the school district conducted a Dropout Prevention Rally. Then in August 2009, the district sponsored a Dropout Prevention Celebration — which included a parade, cheers and several skits from the various schools.
Griffin said the activities are a part of the school district’s promotion of the state’s dropout prevention initiative of ‘On The Bus,’ which encourages students to get on the bus and stay in school.
Monique Agee is the school district’s Dropout Prevention coordinator.
Agee said the goal of the program is to prevent students from giving up and dropping out of school.
To reach the district’s goal to reduce the dropout rate, the Laurel School District has put into place a Dropout Prevention Department that is working to encourage students to pursue a high school diploma and beyond.
Griffin said the visit by X2 and Win Win Global officials was another way to stress the importance of an education.
Win Win Global CEO Victor Newman said the company’s goal is to provide quality music to young people while encouraging them to get an education and achieve their ambitions.
The recent event with X2 and officials with Win Win Global was a collaboration of efforts by the LSD’s Dropout Prevention Department and the local Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Committee.
“Throughout the year, the Laurel School District does things to promote education and children staying in school,” Griffin said. “This activity was just another way to encourage the young people while stressing the importance of education.”
