Rose Hill VFD to get new fire station

BAY SPRINGS – The Jasper County Board of Supervisors during a meeting Monday in Bay Springs agreed to allocate additional funds for a new fire station in Rose Hill.

Beat Two Supervisor Henry Hayes, who represents the Rose Hill area, made the motion to amend the order and approve $40,000 for the purchase of a new fire station building in Rose Hill to be located near the nutrition center.

Officials said the money will be used for the Rose Hill Volunteer Fire Department Building.

According to officials, the Rose Hill Voting Precinct also operates at this same site.

“We have already made some improvements with our fire stations in other areas of the county and we were at a Nine (Fire) Rating,” Hayes said earlier. “Now, with all the improvements, we are at an Eight (Fire) Rating.”

Also in Rose Hill, Jasper County officials announced in November 2009 that they had received a state grant to help build a nutrition site.

The letter addressed to Supervisor Johnny Rowell, president of the board of supervisors, states that the county’s “application for Regular Public Facilities funds through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program in the amount of $155,000 has been approved by the Mississippi Development Authority.”

Hayes said he’s pleased with the process being made on that project.

Also Monday, the supervisors approved a resolution honoring the Boy Scouts of America and the Pine Burr Area Council on their 100th year anniversary of scouting.

The supervisors also approved several appointments Monday.

The board appointed Jimmy Bufkin to a five-year term as a commissioner for the Stringer Fire District.

The supervisors also appointed Vernell Lofton to replace Selina Williams on the East Central Planning and Development District.

In other business, the board approved expenses for Supervisors Lonnie Thigpen and Curtis Gray to attend the MAS-MC Educational Conference to be held April 12-14 in Jackson; approved some deletions and changes to the Solid Waste Roll for the first and second districts; approved a 16th Section residential lease with Richard Ulmer per request from the West Jasper School District; approved a contract with Statewide Mutual Aid Compact (SMAC); and approved 2009-2010 dues to the National Judges Association for Judge Sullivan Dukes in the amount of $120.
