LAUREL —
A Jones County resident has received a “Patriot Award” from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
Mike Wilson, a Mississippi representative for the U.S. Department of Defense program, bestowed the award Thursday on Jason Terry, food service director for South Central Regional Medical Center.
Wilson said Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is an agency that seeks to promote a culture in which all American employers support and value the military service of their employees.
Those serving in the U.S. National Guard and Reserve can nominate their bosses for the “Patriot Award” as a way to say thanks for their treatment prior to heading overseas.
In this case, Valeria Glover, a cafeteria employee, nominated Terry for throwing her a going away party and e-mailing her while she was in Iraq, Wilson said.
“We also gave the hospital a 5-Star Award as a supporting organization,” he said.
Upon receiving the award, Terry said he was “very honored.”
“Our company is on good standing with those serving in the military,” Terry said. “I’m honored to have to get this award, and pleased to have employees go out and serve their country. We hope they come back safely.”
Glover, who is part of the 647th Transportation Unit in Laurel, returned to work this week after serving 13 months overseas at Camp Taji and Camp Speicher in Iraq.
“They gave me much prayers and much love,” she said. “He (Terry) would send me e-mails and make me feel really comfortable. He supported me with everything.”
John Chioco, SCRMC associate executive director, was on hand to accept the hospital’s 5-Star Award.
“I’m elated that Valerie nominated Jason for the award,” he said. “We support all of our employees that are aligned with the military. We appreciate their service.”
Chioco noted that a clinic manager recently accepted a similar award for supporting the U.S. Armed Services.
