Laurel —
A Jones County teenager charged with shooting Laurel officer Kim Stewart last December will have his day in court.
Ira Hadley Jr., 18, 317 W. 17th Ave., was on the run after escaping from the Jones County Adult Detention Facility in Ellisville Oct. 30 when he shot Stewart, who had responded to an anonymous tip of Hadley’s whereabouts.
Officers received the tip Dec. 30 that Hadley had returned to his residence. He was apprehended, but not before shooting Stewart twice including in the foot.
Hadley appeared Tuesday before Jones County Circuit Court Judge Billy Joe Landrum to be indicted on charges of aggravated assault of a police officer and felony possession of a firearm. A trial is expected to begin Sept. 22.
Hadley, who is being represented by defense attorney Michael Mitchell, has yet to be indicted on escape charges.
In other news, attorneys representing Belinda Boleyn, who was convicted in April in the manslaughter death of her husband, petitioned Landrum for a new trial.
Boleyn was charged in the shooting death of her husband, Michael Boleyn Sr., in April 2005. During the trial, Jones County District Attorney Tony Buckley said Boleyn claimed self-defense and offered a “buffet line” of accusations against her husband.
Ultimately, Boleyn was found guilty and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. However, her attorneys, James K. Dukes and John Collette, petitioned the court for a new trial, allowing their client to be free on bond until a new court date was set.
Landrum denied the motion for a new trial Tuesday, and the case will now be sent to the Mississippi Supreme Court.
Also on Tuesday, the court accepted a number of pleas stemming from drug arrests and other charges.
