Powers Fire & Rescue Chief Brent Broadway couldn’t believe his eyes Friday when a small black puppy came walking around the side of a dumpster used to train firefighters on dumpster fire attack at the Powers Fire & Rescue station.
What he found next made him more than a little angry along with a host of Powers firefighters who had just finished responding to a serious automobile accident. Six puppies had been abandoned by the dumpster and the one that came looking for help directed Chief Broadway and firefighters Latrelle Knight and Nathan Ritchey to his other four brothers and one sister.
“It’s just ridiculous that someone would throw these puppies out just like trash,” noted Broadway. “Fortunately we found them, brought them in the station and gave them some water to drink. They were suffering from the high heat and lack of water, but seemed to bounce right back after a little care.”
Powers Assistant Chief Lance Chancellor took all six of the puppies home and they are now under the care of his daughters Kelsi and Daryn, and son Trevor.
“We had canned puppy food at our home that my wife Danette mistakenly bought yesterday for our dogs and gave them more water and a good bath,” said Chancellor “One of the puppies was suffering from the heat and lack of water more than the others and had to be fed puppy formula from an eye dropper.
“We will take care of them including taking them to the veterinarian until someone claims them or we find good homes for them,” noted Chancellor. “Our kids have already named them — Bentley, Chance, Shadow, Rowdy, Milo and Buddy — so they are well into the process of being readied to become best friends for some lucky boys and girls.”
If anyone would like to give the puppies a good home, they can contact Chancellor at 601-319-5767.
