LAUREL —
The driver of a 2001 model Honda Civic traveling west on Hwy. 84 East near Springer's Auto Salvage escaped injury when the car he was driving burst into flames on Monday at approximately 11:55 p.m.
Powers Volunteer Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the call and responded with Engine 1 and Tanker 1. Powers Fire Chief Brent Broadway advised responding fire apparatus that the vehicle was fully involved in fire with several small explosions reported as the car's front tires, airbags and what was believed to be ammunition in the vehicle burned.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and extinguished the burning vehicle which sustained extreme fire damage to the engine and passenger compartments.
The driver advised that what he thought to be transmission fluid began spraying from under the hood onto the windshield and as he slowed to pull over the car burst into flames.
Both westbound lanes of Hwy. 84 were closed for approximately fifteen minutes as firefighters extinguished the blaze although traffic was allowed to move around the incident in the center turn lane of the highway.
Units from the Laurel Police Department were the first on the scene as the burning vehicle was visible from the city limits of Laurel. Trooper David Smith of the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the incident as well.
There were no reports of injuries to any emergency services personnel and all units were back in service by 1:30 a.m.
