To the editor:
More than 4300 Mississippians volunteered for Sea duty in the Merchant Marine during World War II but were denied benefits under the original G.I. Bill of Rights of 1944.
Nebraska’s Senator Ben Nelson is sponsoring Senate Bill S-663, called “Belated thank you to the Merchant Mariners of World War II Act of 2009.” The bill would provide a monthly stipend to all surviving Mariners for their heroism and their critical role in our World War II victory. In May, 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed this bill and forwarded it to the Senate where it is being held up in the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Mississippi’s Senator Thad Cochran has already signed on as a co-sponsor of said bill and now we hope Mississippi’s Senator Roger Wicker will also join the more than approximately 50 co-sponsoring Senators in co-sponsoring Senate Bill S-663 and honor these forgotten Mississippi Warriors. Senator Wicker’s joining in on this bill would be especially meaningful since he is a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
Our Senators need to tell these Veterans that our country appreciates their gallant efforts and that it’s time to secure the recognition and compensation these Mariners were denied after World War II.

Donations requested for local kidney patient
To the Editor:
Mrs. Herticine Parkman is a kidney patient who has been battling with kidney failure for quite some time. Most of us have been blessed with the wealth of our health. With that being said we are asking for donations to help Mrs. Parkman with this process which has been very costly. -

Constituent not happy with Palazzo
To the editor:
A year ago we replaced Congressman Gene Taylor because he had thrown in with the liberal Democrats and Speaker Pelosi and was voting with them most of the time. We elected Steven Palazzo to replace him because he was the only one running against Taylor and we were hoping he would do a better job. -
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus
Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

Athletics ‘dumbing down’ civilization
To the editor:
We can but muse about the reported $254 million dollar contract recently awarded a professional baseball player! Contracts in excess of $100 million have seemingly become routine in all of professional athletics: football, basketball, golf and who knows what else these days. We are told “these amounts (being paid to what can best be labeled ‘a discretionary workforce within our society’) are actually well within what the market will bear” — just mostly from dollars generated by television networks out of advertising accounts. - More Letters to the Editor Headlines
