LAUREL —
Alan Morgan, an owner of Morgan Bros. Millwork & Supply in Laurel, said Wednesday that he has a “glass half full” view of the current state of the housing industry.
Morgan said the 30-year-old company has taken some steps in the last three years in order to survive in the struggling economy including downsizing the number of employees and consolidating some of its operations.
“It was pretty tough in the early ‘80s, but I haven’t seen it this challenging,” Morgan told members of the Laurel Kiwanis Club Wednesday. “To get back, we’re going to have to let small businesses take some of their capital and spend it on equipment. That’s how you’re going to increase the overall economy.”
Morgan said the company made the decision three weeks ago to shutter its moulding operation across from the main Laurel plant.
“We had some duplicate equipment, and we’ll be able to shift employees around where needed,” he said of the consolidation.
Morgan said sales have been “like a yo-yo” since the economy took a turn.
“Monday was the best order day we’ve had in 24 months,” he said. “Tuesday was also pretty good, and today started off good.”
Morgan said Morgan Bros. Millwork & Supply serves cabinet shops, individual customers and contractors in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and the Florida panhandle.
“We specialize in cabinet doors, dovetail drawer boxes and mouldings,” he said. “90 percent of our orders are faxed, e-mailed or called in.”
Morgan said the company delivers about 95 percent of its products on Morgan Bros. trucks.
