BILOXI —
On Aug. 29, citizens across South Mississippi will pause to reflect on the five years that have passed since Hurricane Katrina swept away our coast. We have since been on an arduous course toward recovery, rebuilding and renaissance.
It is a solemn anniversary, and in our reflection we recall the precious lives lost, and all of the blood, sweat and toil that has been expended over the span of these critical first years of our rebirth. ...
No one could have known the many obstacles that would impede our recovery, from the massive problems presented by insurance, to the most severe economic national recession since the 1930s, to the oil spill disaster in the Gulf.
But through all of our difficulties, the spirit and character of South Mississippians have continued to stir feelings of admiration across the nation. We have stood in awe of all that has been accomplished by these brave folks from the first day until this day, and we have been especially privileged to tell their story.
It is likely that every person who survived the hurricane had some thought about where we would stand five years out. Some perhaps had unrealistic expectations, and given all that has happened, it may well be another five years, or more, for those to be met. ...
The overall impression — the one that comes to mind when you just think about our hometown communities — one by one, across the coast, is very good.
There are many empty spaces where homes and businesses once stood, and we will long miss the massive part of our history and culture lost, and though the new coast that is rising from Katrina's blank canvas is a work in progress, it is already a worthy descendant to the former. ...
If natural selection involves survival of the fittest, then these South Mississippians are indestructible, and what they have done in five years is only a preview of what they will do in the next year, and five.
