ELLISVILLE —
The Jones County Junior College Maroon Typhoon Marching Band will continue a long standing tradition on Tuesday, Aug. 31 with its annual band exhibition.
The band will perform after “Meet the Bobcats” at approximately 7 p.m. in the Bobcat football stadium/Sim Cooley field, on the JCJC campus.
Everyone is invited to this free event to see and hear the band, as well as meet the athletes during “Meet the Bobcats”.
The Maroon Typhoon’s popularity and reputation continues to spread, drawing students from Mississippi to Minnesota.
The band represents seven states including Indiana, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Minnesota and Mississippi.
At Tuesday’s event, the 200 member band will give a sneak preview of its 2010 pre-game and halftime shows. The pre-game show will include “Back in the USSR”, and traditional music like, “America the Beautiful”, “The Star Spangled Banner”, “JCJC Alma Mater”, and the “JCJC Fight Song”. The half-time show theme is “Peace, Love and Harmony”. Musical selections will include “Aquarius”, “Spinning Wheel”, “Lucretia Mack Evil”, “More and More” and “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”.
Director of Bands, Matthew Pickering said, “Expect to see lots of bright colors, peace signs, flowers and even some tie-dye!”
Another highlight of the band exhibition will be the introduction of each band member.
They will be recognized and thanked for their contributions to the band and Jones.

After leaving the Trapani Salt Flats on the western coast of Sicily on a late November afternoon, I maneuvered our vehicle down yet another remote, unmarked dirt road and passed dozens of vacant houses. Arbor Day
I cannot recall a time when trees were not a part of my life. During WWII while our father was away in Panama City building ships, we moved a mile north of our farm and lived in the teacher's home on the campus of the Gitano Grammar School. In that setting I formed my first memories of trees.

WCU to host exhibit by Robert Long
William Carey University hosted a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit “Robert Long: Works in Clay” by artist Robert Long. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 31 and is open to the public, free admission.
