Northeast Jones Tigers recently elected members of the 2009 Tiger Homecoming Court. Members of the court are as follows: 2009 Homecoming Queen – Lauren Bradley, Maids of Honor – Jamie Hinton and Terri Lindsey, Student Body Maids – Laken Herrington and Audrianna Strickland, Tiger Maid – Mary Wheaton, FFA Sweetheart – Shelby Walters, Football Maids – Morgan Pace and Olivia Plummer, Senior Maid – Brianna Benson, Junior Maid – Hayley Davidson, Sophomore Maid – Kayly Barlow, Freshman Maid – Rachel Taylor, 8th Grade Maid – Bobbie Jo Davis, 7th Grade Maid – Morgan Mansell. The Tigers will celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 9, in Tiger Stadium. The Homecoming Parade will begin at 5:35 p.m. followed by the Homecoming Ceremony. The game against West Lauderdale will begin at 7 p.m. Please join the NEJ Tigers as they “Put On The Ritz” in the Jungle to celebrate Homecoming 2009! My sister and I are seated in the cart our father built for us, and our donkey Sunflower is pulling us up the hill toward the edge of the woods. I must be about seven years old and maybe my sister is ten. It is early February on an unseasonably warm afternoon. We have just returned from school and received permission from our mother to hitch-up Sunflower and go for a ride.

After leaving the Trapani Salt Flats on the western coast of Sicily on a late November afternoon, I maneuvered our vehicle down yet another remote, unmarked dirt road and passed dozens of vacant houses. No one was on the streets. It had been 10 minutes since we had seen another car. Sunlight was at a minimum. We had been warned several times about remote areas of Sicily.

Arbor Day
I cannot recall a time when trees were not a part of my life. During WWII while our father was away in Panama City building ships, we moved a mile north of our farm and lived in the teacher's home on the campus of the Gitano Grammar School. In that setting I formed my first memories of trees.

WCU to host exhibit by Robert Long
William Carey University hosted a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit “Robert Long: Works in Clay” by artist Robert Long. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 31 and is open to the public, free admission.
