The Laurel Jones County Library System Inc. hosts Totally Tots each Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Laurel Branch. Toddlers under age 5 are invited along with their parents and grandparents to learn about a new topic each week and participate in a related craft project. This past Tuesday, Children’s Librarian, Jill Nicholson presented a program on groundhogs in recognition of Groundhog Day, Feb. 2. More than 15 tots enjoyed listening to Nicholson read several books on the subject and afterwards were able to draw their own groundhog, with or without his shadow. In the photo at left, siblings Patrick, 2, Libbi Cate, 3, and Peyton, 2, get a little assistance from mom, Amber Stell, during the craft activity at the library’s Totally Tots event.

My sister and I are seated in the cart our father built for us, and our donkey Sunflower is pulling us up the hill toward the edge of the woods. I must be about seven years old and maybe my sister is ten. It is early February on an unseasonably warm afternoon. We have just returned from school and received permission from our mother to hitch-up Sunflower and go for a ride.

No one was on the streets. It had been 10 minutes since we had seen another car. Sunlight was at a minimum. We had been warned several times about remote areas of Sicily.

Arbor Day
I cannot recall a time when trees were not a part of my life. During WWII while our father was away in Panama City building ships, we moved a mile north of our farm and lived in the teacher's home on the campus of the Gitano Grammar School. In that setting I formed my first memories of trees.
