LAUREL —
United States Air Force Master Sergeant Retired James R. Whittington (21 years service) and United States Army veteran Benjy Hornsby (8 years service), who is also a member of the NEJ faculty, recently presented Northeast Jones High School with a new 6’ x 10’ American Flag.
The flag was provided by the National Association of Uniformed Services (NAUS) and other patriotic organizations at the request of MSGT Retired Whittington.
Accepting the new flag on behalf of the Northeast Jones faculty, staff, and student body, supervising principal Cooper Pope said, “We are extremely honored to accept this flag. It will be raised each day to fly as a symbol of our hard won freedom and in honor of those who sacrificed for and daily protect that freedom!”
Pope, assisted by Coach Hornsby and Gary Townsend, 11th and 12th Grade Principal, then raised the flag to fly over the NEJ campus.
As the new flag rose to shine in the brilliant sunlight, rippling in a gentle breeze, NEJ senior Kimberly Page sang the national anthem.
Attending the presentation were NEJ Middle School Principal Marie Keyes, 9th and 10th Grade Principal Eric Walters, Athletic Director Keith Braddock, and a number of Northeast Jones students.

My sister and I are seated in the cart our father built for us, and our donkey Sunflower is pulling us up the hill toward the edge of the woods. I must be about seven years old and maybe my sister is ten. It is early February on an unseasonably warm afternoon. We have just returned from school and received permission from our mother to hitch-up Sunflower and go for a ride.

Travel Technology
After leaving the Trapani Salt Flats on the western coast of Sicily on a late November afternoon, I maneuvered our vehicle down yet another remote, unmarked dirt road and passed dozens of vacant houses. No one was on the streets. It had been 10 minutes since we had seen another car. Sunlight was at a minimum. We had been warned several times about remote areas of Sicily.

Arbor Day
I cannot recall a time when trees were not a part of my life. During WWII while our father was away in Panama City building ships, we moved a mile north of our farm and lived in the teacher's home on the campus of the Gitano Grammar School. In that setting I formed my first memories of trees.
