My sister and I are seated in the cart our father built for us, and our donkey Sunflower is pulling us up the hill toward the edge of the woods. I must be about seven years old and maybe my sister is ten. It is early February on an unseasonably warm afternoon. When younger, I often sat on the porch with our great-granny while we read the afternoon newspaper within view of the tree, and I frequently listened as Granny repeated the story of how the unusual tree came to our family farm.
