LAUREL — Northeast Jones Junior Beta Club recently presented a check to the Christian Food Mission (CFM) in recognition of the necessary and invaluable service the organization provides to the residents of the area. Accepting for the CFM, director Robert Smith stated, “We are totally donation dependent, so this donation is very greatly appreciated! The weak economy has resulted in decreased donations to the Mission and has increased the number of people needing services. This donation could not have arrived at a better time!” The CFM receives no governmental funding choosing to operate solely through voluntary contributions of services and gifts given by churches, interested individuals, and businesses. The CFM provides one meal per day at the Laurel Chantilly Street location, operates a food bank for grocery distribution to the needy, and delivers meals to the elderly and shut-in five days a week via the Meals-On-Wheels program. The Northeast Jones Junior Beta Club is sponsored by Mrs. Ann Tucker, Mrs. Frances Hill, and Mrs. Connie Wade. Support of the Christian Food Mission is one of many service projects members will undertake during the school year. My sister and I are seated in the cart our father built for us, and our donkey Sunflower is pulling us up the hill toward the edge of the woods. I must be about seven years old and maybe my sister is ten. It is early February on an unseasonably warm afternoon. We have just returned from school and received permission from our mother to hitch-up Sunflower and go for a ride.

Travel Technology
After leaving the Trapani Salt Flats on the western coast of Sicily on a late November afternoon, I maneuvered our vehicle down yet another remote, unmarked dirt road and passed dozens of vacant houses. No one was on the streets. It had been 10 minutes since we had seen another car. Sunlight was at a minimum. We had been warned several times about remote areas of Sicily.

Arbor Day
I cannot recall a time when trees were not a part of my life. During WWII while our father was away in Panama City building ships, we moved a mile north of our farm and lived in the teacher's home on the campus of the Gitano Grammar School. In that setting I formed my first memories of trees.
