Growth continues on Hwy. 15 in Laurel

Familiar restaurant relocating; another coming to town

Despite the dwindling economy, the City of Laurel continues to attract new business while other establishments are continuing to grow.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is coming to the City Beautiful. The new businesses will be located in the shopping area that contains Fred’s and Dirt Cheap among other stores.

According to the corporate Website, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which will be located at 2159 Highway 15 N., already has a presence in Hattiesburg at US Highway 98 and Turtle Creek Parkway. The site lists the Laurel location as coming soon, as well phone and fax numbers.

Brent Lambert is the owner of the Laurel Dickey’s restaurant, which is scheduled for opening in early April.

“Construction actually started the week after Thanksgiving, but we’ve had a bunch of delays due to all of the rain and snow,” he said. “Right now, we’re looking at opening the first or second week of April as long as the weather holds out. But, you can’t hold me to that.”

Lambert is a familiar face in the Laurel area having worked with McAlister’s Deli for 14 years, including the last four years as manager. He has also worked as manager for the Laurel Captain D’s for five years as well as the old Bonanza and Ponderosa Steakhouses.

While traveling with McAlister’s, Lambert and his wife decided to open a restaurant of their own.

“We always wanted to do some kind of barbecue,” he said. “We always thought a good barbecue restaurant would do well for the community.”

Lambert noted that while shopping in Hattiesburg one day, his wife stopped at the Dickey’s there and “fell in love with it.”

“We started looking into it then,” he said. “We’ve had great support from the Dickey’s franchise owner. They pretty much hand in hand walked through everything with me and made it very, very simple for us.

“It’s been a very good experience,” Lambert added. “My only complaint would be the weather holding up construction, but you can’t control that.”

Lambert said his business partners in the restaurant are his mother-in-law, Mildred Barnes, and brother-in-law, Jim D. Barnes.

“Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has been around for 41 years,” he said. “They started in Dallas, Texas, where their corporate office is located. It’s a quick casual barbecue restaurant with a variety of barbecue fixings like ribs, brisket, sausage, chicken, ham, turkey, all smoked with signature Dickey’s sauces.”

Lambert said he would describe the restaurant as “good quality food with good portions.”

“Everybody I’ve talked to, I’ve told them to go down there (Hattiesburg) and try it,” he said. “They love it. I’ve not had any negative responses from anyone.”

Meanwhile, one of Laurel’s most popular restaurants, Mi Casita, located at 3834 State Highway 15 Bus Route, is planning a move.

Chico Suarez, manager of Mi Casita, said the restaurant, which has been in Laurel for eight years, will move later this year to a location next to Kroger on Highway 15 North.

“We started construction this week,” he said. “It will take a minimum of six months. We’re just excited. That’s all we know right now.”

Suarez said the restaurant is relocating to better serve its customers.

“We have a little trouble with the parking here,” he said. “We’re the last turn off the highway. We want to have better access and better service for all our customers.”

How was your Super Bowl Weekend?  Mallorie and I had a full schedule as we attended the “Krewe of Docs” hosted by Oncologics to benefit the American Cancer Society Saturday night.  The event was held here in Downtown Laurel and everyone did a great job.  The Cowboy Blues Band played the night away and fun was had by all.  We got geared up again Sunday night for Super Bowl festivities.  After our Saints fell short against the 49ers, I was less than excited about this year’s big game.  I picked a favorite anyway and my allegiance fell on the shoulders of Eli and the Giants.  It was a great game to watch as a football fan and as always the commercials were pretty great too.

What a great weekend!  The weather was just right for getting outside and practicing your favorite hobby or just “piddlin” around.  I even went over to Gardner Park and threw the pigskin with my buddies, Ben and Jasper.  Mallorie’s  folks made it over to Laurel Saturday afternoon and  we fired up the grill.  We dined on steaks, chops, red fish and all the fixin’s – thank you Mike!
