EDA of Jones County honored at SEDC Annual Conference

Best of Class award given at Communications Awards ceremony

The Economic Development Authority of Jones County, Mississippi received a Best of Class Award at the Communications Awards ceremony at the Southern Economic Development Council’s (SEDC) Annual Conference held Aug. 15-18, in Point Clear, Ala.

The winning entry, submitted by Sandy Holifield, was the organization’s Howard Technology Park Project Ready Overall Marketing Campaign. All entries were judged on graphic appeal, clarity and appropriateness of message, positioning and differentiation and content.

“The competition was stiff this year with over 100 entries, as economic development organizations throughout our region submitted expertly prepared materials,” said SEDC President Gene Stinson. “The entry submitted by the Economic Development Authority of Jones County was outstanding and captured the attention of the judges to garner its award.”

The Southern Economic Development Council is an 850 member professional association composed of a broad cross-section of active and influential economic developers from business and industry, utilities, transportation, financial and education institutions, chambers of commerce, and local, regional and state development agencies.

Members in the 17-state area share a common interest: the promotion and enhancement of the economic development profession. The SEDC region includes the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland and the District of Columbia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

How was your Super Bowl Weekend?  Mallorie and I had a full schedule as we attended the “Krewe of Docs” hosted by Oncologics to benefit the American Cancer Society Saturday night.  The event was held here in Downtown Laurel and everyone did a great job.  The Cowboy Blues Band played the night away and fun was had by all.  We got geared up again Sunday night for Super Bowl festivities.  After our Saints fell short against the 49ers, I was less than excited about this year’s big game.  I picked a favorite anyway and my allegiance fell on the shoulders of Eli and the Giants.  It was a great game to watch as a football fan and as always the commercials were pretty great too.

Mortgages are cheaper than ever. Economists and real estate analysts who predicted lower interest rates were not disappointed; the earliest numbers from 2012 have reached an all-time low, leading a number of homeowners to consider their options.

What a great weekend!  The weather was just right for getting outside and practicing your favorite hobby or just “piddlin” around.  I even went over to Gardner Park and threw the pigskin with my buddies, Ben and Jasper.  Mallorie’s  folks made it over to Laurel Saturday afternoon and  we fired up the grill.  We dined on steaks, chops, red fish and all the fixin’s – thank you Mike!
