Laurel Oil raises funds for Cancer Society

Company also educates employees about cancer

Laurel Oil LLC presented a check for more than $6,500 to the American Cancer Society last week. All seven of the company’s stores participated in the effort.

Betty Lacoste, manager/supervisor of Laurel Oil, said Wednesday that the money was raised through a number of means including a car wash, rummage sale and a breast cancer walk held last October.

However, Lacoste said the fundraising efforts began through an attempt to educate employees about cancer.

“Some of our employees and their families had dealt with it,” she said. “It was kind of a touchy area with us. It turned out better than we anticipated, and we are looking forward to doing more.”

Lacoste said Laurel Oil is also discussing fielding a team for the annual Relay for Life walk.

“Paige McCardle (ACS’ community representative) has been wonderful,” she said. “She helped us every way that she could. She helped it all come together because we had no idea where to start.”

McCardle praised company leaders for not only their fundraising efforts, but also the education of their employees.

“Yes, the fundraising is fabulous. I just want to thank them so much,” she said. “But, the best part is that they are a company wanting to take care of their employees. They want their employees to be aware. That’s kind of how it all started.”

McCardle said Lacoste reached out to her to put together educational packets about cancer.

“Each employee received a packet that told them about all of the screening guidelines such as women at age 40 need a mammogram, and men at age 50 need a colonoscopy,” she said. “Because their employees are predominantly female, they wanted to do something to focus on women’s health.”

McCardle said the more than $6,500 raised shows what can be done when a group decides to partner together for a great cause such as the American Cancer Society.

“They sold pink ribbons in their store for a dollar,” she said. “They had a rummage sale and an awareness walk. A lot of small things going together can make a big difference.

“Now, they’ve decided for the month of April to sell Relay for Life moons and stars in their stores,” McCardle added. “They’re joining the whole Relay movement in Jones County. It’s just amazing to me.”

McCardle again stressed the need for education and early detection of cancer.

“If we can just get people to realize they need early checkups, they will never get to stage where they are diagnosed with cancer,” she said. “The money is wonderful, but I think it’s so neat that a company wants to take that much involvement in their employees’ lives, healthy well being and wellness.”

How was your Super Bowl Weekend?  Mallorie and I had a full schedule as we attended the “Krewe of Docs” hosted by Oncologics to benefit the American Cancer Society Saturday night.  The event was held here in Downtown Laurel and everyone did a great job.  The Cowboy Blues Band played the night away and fun was had by all.  We got geared up again Sunday night for Super Bowl festivities.  After our Saints fell short against the 49ers, I was less than excited about this year’s big game.  I picked a favorite anyway and my allegiance fell on the shoulders of Eli and the Giants.  It was a great game to watch as a football fan and as always the commercials were pretty great too.

What a great weekend!  The weather was just right for getting outside and practicing your favorite hobby or just “piddlin” around.  I even went over to Gardner Park and threw the pigskin with my buddies, Ben and Jasper.  Mallorie’s  folks made it over to Laurel Saturday afternoon and  we fired up the grill.  We dined on steaks, chops, red fish and all the fixin’s – thank you Mike!
