LAUREL —
Workers from Laurel’s Headrick Co. installed new signs Thursday at Oak Street Place, located at 409 West Oak Street.
Lyon Herrington, a project manager with Headrick, said new signage had been planned on the former Sears Roebuck building at the time of its renovation several years ago.
“We did some proposals for them, and they felt like it would be too expensive,” Herrington said. “They chose not to do anything at that time.”
Herrington said what was installed Thursday was a lower cost sign than what was originally proposed. However, the aluminum, non-lighted signs still cost “several thousand dollars.”
“With our production schedule, it took about four weeks from start to finish to complete,” he said. “We came up with the design and the colors to match the decor and the canopy. Installation was only a day process.”
Herrington said similar signs were installed on the front and back of the building.
The horizontal signs bear the slogan for Oak Street Place, which is “Live, Work, Play.” That slogan follows the theme of the multi-use facility which offers apartments, approximately 4,000 square feet of office space, an art gallery and its centerpiece, Lee’s Coffee & Tea.
Attempts to reach Amy Gonzalez, manager of Oak Street Place, were unsuccessful as of press time.
Herrington said Headrick Co. has remained busy along 16th Avenue.
A billboard is slated to be installed this week in front of Sake Cafe, located at 2001 Highway 15 North, and in front of the new Dickeys BBQ Pit restaurant.
“We put up signs throughout the U.S. for customers and crosses for churches which are scattered across the country,” Herrington said. “We’ve got a 200-foot cross in Orlando near Disney World.”

Slowly but Surely
How was your Super Bowl Weekend? Mallorie and I had a full schedule as we attended the “Krewe of Docs” hosted by Oncologics to benefit the American Cancer Society Saturday night. The event was held here in Downtown Laurel and everyone did a great job. The Cowboy Blues Band played the night away and fun was had by all. We got geared up again Sunday night for Super Bowl festivities. After our Saints fell short against the 49ers, I was less than excited about this year’s big game. I picked a favorite anyway and my allegiance fell on the shoulders of Eli and the Giants. It was a great game to watch as a football fan and as always the commercials were pretty great too.

Eyes on the U.S. Economy
What a great weekend! The weather was just right for getting outside and practicing your favorite hobby or just “piddlin” around. I even went over to Gardner Park and threw the pigskin with my buddies, Ben and Jasper. Mallorie’s folks made it over to Laurel Saturday afternoon and we fired up the grill. We dined on steaks, chops, red fish and all the fixin’s – thank you Mike!
