How Venom Just Broke Box Office Records

The previous best October opening was $55.7 million for "Gravity" in 2013.

Venom has shattered a North American box office record in October with an $80 million opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film holds a 31% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

But "Venom" carries a bad 32% on the tomatometer and scored a recording breaking box office debut anyway.

Unlike Venom, A Star is Born has a favourable critical reception.

Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott, Scott Haze, Sope Aluko and Ron Cephas Jones. The film, which is the fourth "A Star Is Born" since 1937, has built up vast buzz for its emotional story, strong performances and solid direction from first time director and star Bradley Cooper.

A Star Is Born, whose estimates sat at US$30 million, earned US$42.6 million.

Though Venom's domestic haul is impressive, its $125.2 million earnings overseas during its opening weekend further bolsters its total opening weekend gross to $205.2 million, Variety reports.

"A Star is Born" carries a 91% on the tomatometer and has all the film nerds making Oscar predictions way too early.

The third movie in the Rowan Atkinson-starring spy comedy opened to £4.1 million, over a million more than Bradley Cooper's drama.
