Aston Villa's underwhelming start to the season continued with a 3-3 draw against Preston on Tuesday night.
Villa were awarded a penalty at the very death, which Ireland global Glenn Whelan stepped up to take after coming off the bench for Conor Hourihane in the 82nd minute.
Scoring 15 points in 11 games, the team occupies the 12th place in the table.
One fan hurled a cabbage at the manager before the game, in anger at the team's recent performance. "Certainly for someone like him, I'm surprised he knew what a cabbage was".
"Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that manager Steve Bruce and his assistants are leaving their posts with immediate effect after having their contracts terminated", the club said.
The cabbage throwing incident, although unusual, can sum up what the majority of Aston Villa fans think of Bruce, who believe he is not the right man to restore their club to the Premier League.
Brentford manager Dean Smith has been installed as early favourite with the bookmakers to replace outgoing Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce at Villa Park.
That triggered chants of "We want Bruce out" from the home fans on the Holte End - but Villa showed that they still had some fight left in them.
The club is now in the process of appointing a new manager.
