Surprise as the Puskás Award goes to Salah

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was the surprise victor of this year's Puskas Award.

He posted on Twitter: 'Congrats @MoSalah on your 7th best goal from last season winning goal of the year #Baller #Topbin #oneofmanyworldies'.

The Egyptian star curled the ball past Everton's Jordan Pickford in the first half of the Derby, a game which ended 1-1 as Wayne Rooney's penalty earned the visitors a point.

Meanwhile, others would point to Cristiano Ronaldo, who was absent from the ceremony, and his stunning overhead kick for Real Madrid against Juventus in Europe's elite competition as the one and only victor.

Bale's former Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona star Lionel Messi were also on the shortlist but were pipped to the prize by Salah, who struck in a Premier League draw against Liverpool's rivals.

That sentiment was echoed by teammate James Milner, who offered wry congratulations to his teammate after the victor - chosen by an online fan vote - was announced.

Here is the Salah strike that won the top prize.

"Thank you, everyone", the 26-year-old said.

'I am looking forward to winning another award tonight.

Now with Real Madrid, the 26-year-old Courtois joked before his award was announced that Federation Internationale de Football Association should also hand out a save-of-the-year prize.

All three enjoyed great World Cup campaigns, with Courtois helping Belgium to a third-place finish.
