Oculus Announces Oculus Quest, Its First All-in-One VR Gaming System

"Tools we are building in AR and VR have the opportunity to answer the question of what it would be like to be transported".

Oculus Quest was formerly known as Project Santa Cruz, and that has been made clear that Oculus Quest is the final name of the new VR helmet.

"This is the VR experience everyone's been waiting for", said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, at the Oculus event started on September 26, 2018, in California. The 835 is more powerful than the 821 processor built into the Oculus Go, but it's hard to imagine it coming close to the rendering power of the Oculus Rift paired with an Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU or better.

This story is still developing.

Facebook on Wednesday unveiled an upgraded Oculus virtual reality headset with power to handle the intensive graphics of digital worlds in a wire-free experience. "Made for immersive VR gaming, it leverages Oculus Insight, our new inside-out tracking system that lets you go beyond just roomscale".

While we don't yet know much in terms of specs, we do know that the Quest will feature the same phenomenal display as the Oculus Go, while also featuring lens spacing adjustment to help maximise comfort during those long gaming sessions.

"Oculus VR head Hugo Barra said the Oculus Quest was made for games", while the other headsets, such as the Go are more video-focused mobile headsets. The Oculus Quest detected all movement, from the swing of our hands to our bodies moving from one side of the court to the other.

Speaking to the BBC of Facebook's latest move, Bryan Ma, VP of client devices research at IDC, commented: "Clearly the VR industry has struggled to get off the ground". Our User Strategy team's product/market fit reviews for startups have consistently shown this dynamic even when users love their VR apps.

"But even with that catalyst, premium standalone VR installed base (again, active units, not sales) might only reach the 10 to 15 million unit range by 2022".

Of course, 6DOF tracking wouldn't be complete without controllers that take advantage of the tracking - and that's what the Oculus Quest offers.

Oculus Quest could be the ultimate expression of VR 1.0, but the market might need to wait for VR 2.0 to hit its inflection point.
