NHL Canadiens deal Pacioretty to Vegas Golden Knights

What Happened Last Year: The 33-year-old Bergeron battled groin issues early and a fractured foot late in the season, and missed 18 games with his assorted injuries throughout the regular season. Montreal will retain 10 percent of Pacioretty's contract, according to multiple reports, while Vegas will retain close to 9.5 percent of Tatar's.

Pacioretty's departure from the Canadiens signals the end of an era.

Suzuki was a first-round draft choice in 2017 (13th overall) and he is listed as a centre although he has played all three forward positions, which makes him a flawless addition to a team that seems determined to fit square pegs into round holes.

The 29-year-old Pacioretty has spent his entire pro career with the Canadiens, and is coming off a 17-goal, 20-assist campaign with the Habs. A consistent scorer throughout his career, Pacioretty had just 17 goals and 37 points in 64 games a year ago.

In any case, the Golden Knights' deal for Pacioretty looks significantly better knowing that he wont be a half-season rental, even more so when you consider that the terms are very agreeable.

But the Canadiens struggled overall and were 29th in the league in offense previous year, meaning there's reason to believe Pacioretty can get back to his productive ways on a very impressive Golden Knights team. Better yet, Pacioretty is going to have a wealth of offensive talent around him, and chances are he's going to have the opportunity to play on a line with either William Karlsson or Paul Stastny as his center. And it would have been one more enormous obstacle to overcome in the quest for redemption from a fourth-from-last place finish a season ago. "Couldn't ask for better music, better atmosphere, better fans". And again, barring last season, Pacioretty has been remarkably consistent. It had the second-worst penalty kill and scored only 130 goals while allowing 158 at five-on-five.

Pacioretty has scored 226 goals and 448 points in 626 games during his National Hockey League career, spent entirely with the Canadiens.

Questions To Be Answered This Season: The 33-year-old Bergeron simply needs to stay on the ice and maintain his current level of play, and that will go a long way toward answering the questions for this season anyway. Tatar was acquired at last season's deadline for three picks - a 2018 first, 2019 second and 2021 third - and now those selections have become a sunk cost with the winger shipped off in the Pacioretty deal. And rest assured, Pacioretty is part of the long-term plan for the Golden Knights. It has been reported by Sportsnet's Eric Engels and TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie that Pacioretty and the Golden Knights are engaged in contract talks.

General manager Marc Bergevin stepped up to the podium at the 43rd edition of the Habs' golf tournament and confirmed that the veteran winger requested to be traded at some point last season. Max Pacioretty is about to begin his residency.
