New Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a statement offering condolences and ordering the Pakistani High Commission in London to "provide the family all the necessary facilities and cooperation".
(Dunya News) - Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz have on Tuesday made a decision to not attend last rituals of Kulsoom Nawaz in Lahore owing to legal complications, well-informed sources told Dunya News.
Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed "grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family", said the official military spokesman. Kulsoom Nawaz served as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) from 1999 to 2002.
Kulsoom Nawaz married Nawaz Sharif in 1971 and her husband was prime minister of Pakistan on three occasions - 1990-1993, 1997-1999 and 2013-2017.
"Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz was a courageous woman", Khan was quoted as saying in the statement.
Khan termed the former first lady a "brave woman".
"My sister-in-law and wife of Mian Nawaz Sharif, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz is no more". She was detained by military policewomen and placed under house arrest along with other members of the family.
After the Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from his seat a year ago, Kulsoom was elected to Lahore's NA-120 constituency in a bye-poll.
Mushahidullah Khan said that they would apply for the release of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz from jail to attend the last rites of the deceased. According to some party leaders, she also occasionally wrote Mr Sharif's speeches. She then moved to London for medical care.
Both her sons Hassan and Hussain reside in the United Kingdom and cared for her while Nawaz and Maryam attended near daily hearings of the corruption trial.
Although her public role - particularly with regards to Pakistan's often bitter domestic politics - was limited, she was known to exercise a certain degree of quiet power within the PML-N party. But it soon transpired that she had been diagnosed with lymphoma.
