Russian Federation appoints actor Steven Seagal to deepen ties with US

Seagal, an outspoken supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been a Russian citizen since 2016.

As for the choice of Steven Seagal to be the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative to improve United States and Russian relations, that seems a bit puzzling.

"I am deeply humbled and honored to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties. hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world".

The Russian foreign ministry has explained that the position is public and is not expected to be paid.

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve", the action movie star told TASS news agency. "I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially".

It is the latest honour Russian Federation has bestowed upon Seagal.

The Washington Post was unable to immediately reach Seagal for comment.

Seagal's grandmother was born in Vladivostok, and the actor and Putin share a passion for martial arts. He said he had called Putin "ONE of the World's Great Leaders".

As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least.

It is unclear how Seagal who was given Russian citizenship in 2016 will go about accomplishing that goal.

In 2015, BuzzFeed News reported that two years earlier, Putin had suggested to then-US President Barack Obama that he could make Seagal the honourary Russian consul to California and Arizona.

A Kremlin spokesperson cited Seagal's "warm feelings toward Russia" and his celebrity status as reasons for the gesture, according to Reuters. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter".
