In another sign of drought, water levels in the Danube River in Budapest are about to fall to a level that will expose a small outcrop called Dearth Rock that is nearly always underwater, the National Water Management Authority said.
The current European record of about 118 degrees Fahrenheit (48 degrees Celsius), which was registered in Athens during the summer of 1977, could be broken in the Iberian Peninsula, which includes Spain and Portugal, said Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist with the national weather service in the United Kingdom (U.K.).
Friday saw local all-time record temperatures at nearly half the country's weather stations.
Spain's all-time high temperature record stands at 117.1°F, or 47.3°C, set on July 13, 2017.
Sixteen weather stations in Portugal registered record temperatures on Friday with Alcácer do Sal, near Setúbal, climbing to 45.9C (114.6F).
Two other men - a roadworker in his 40s and a 78-year-old pensioner - also died from heatstroke this week.
Southwark Council said it was suspending the use of barbecues in Burgess Park, south London, after London Fire Brigade warned people to take extra care during the hot weather.
Large sections of the country are on red alert on the country's civil protection agency's danger scale.
"Oh it's awful", said tourist Paul Snell. Highest afternoon temperatures will generally range 18 to 25 degrees, but temperatures possibly reaching a degree or two higher in the East and Southeast.
"Hot and dry air originating off Algeria and Morocco will push northward to the west of Portugal and then steer north-to-south".

And over in Britain, an unusually long, torrid summer has taken its toll on the country's flowers.
June's average United Kingdom maximum temperature was 19.9C, the same as June 1976.
In Scandinavia, temperatures hit records until a few days ago.
The Spanish government has issued a warning about the "extreme risk" caused by the weather this weekend. In Sweden July was a record hot month and wildfires burnt in parts of the country.
