DeSantis To Floridians: Don't 'Monkey This Up' By Voting For Andrew Gillum

He proudly campaigned with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders at his side.

Joe Dinkins of the Working Families Party noted that Gillum scored his primary upset win over better-known and better-funded Democrats by running as "an unapologetic progressive who supports criminal justice reform, Medicare for All, a $15 minimum wage, and more..."

Greene and Levine are both wealthy South Florida Jewish candidates, and from the first moment Greene entered the race, most observers believed he and Levine would fight for the same pool of voters. He was elected mayor in 2014. Sanders (I-VT) said of Gillum's victory. "We now rank 47th in America in average instructional staff salary", said Gillum.

Gillum defeated former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, who previously represented Florida's 2nd district in the House and whose father, Bob Graham, had previously served as governor of the state.

Meanwhile, Levine was among the candidates rallying supporters until the very end. Gillum then continued, "There were not a lot of opportunities to [my brothers] to go and work at some place...our society doesn't look well on people who have a criminal record".

"With one tweet, that kind of put me on the map", DeSantis said. And Gillum, who didn't lead in a single major poll and was behind in fundraising, got an influx of millions from liberal billionaires Tom Steyer and George Soros. Sen. He's a gifted public speaker who did well in debates, often receiving the most applause, but the FBI is investigating Tallahassee city hall for corruption. Gillum says this involves the city, not himself. The front page of his campaign's website was festooned with multiple images of Trump-as was his final campaign ad.

Sharon Grant said she was planning to vote for Putnam - until Trump weighed in on the race. His surprise victory sets up a November showdown with Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, a favorite of President Donald Trump. "Also, @ me next time, @realDonaldTrump".

Josie Parke, 68, an interior designer in Coral Gables, said Trump's backing swayed her vote for DeSantis, too.

Trump doesn't know the meaning of positive momentum.

"I think it's what Florida's been needing", said supporter Lauren Durchslag, 34, of Orlando.

Going full Trump in the governor's race is viewed as a risky move.

DeSantis, who turns 40 next month, is a former Navy lawyer.

Martha McSally fended off a pair of conservative challengers to carry the Republican Senate primary to fill the seat vacated by retiring Sen. Marco Rubio shut down his presidential campaign and made a decision to run for re-election.

"Floridians want a leader who will bring them together; Ron DeSantis has shown that he would only divide Florida".

Elsewhere Tuesday, GOP voters in reliably Republican Oklahoma backed mortgage company owner Kevin Stitt in a runoff for the gubernatorial nomination.

"DeSantis rocks!" shouted Jo-Ann Walker, a homemaker from Mount Dora, Florida. If Gillum wants to make this a referendum on Trump, Republicans say go for it. Republicans will attack Gillum for Tallahassee's city government being under Federal Bureau of Investigation scrutiny for corruption.

DeSantis came from behind with the help of Trump to beat Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who campaigned longer, raised more money and built the support of the party establishment.
