This is Microsoft’s $400 Surface Go

"After widespread speculation, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Go tablet on Tuesday-the first Surface-branded 10" tablet since the non-Pro Surface 3 was introduced in May 2015.

The Surface Go has a 3:2 screen with 1800 x 1200 pixel resolution and is in Microsoft's words the thinnest Surface ever. While it comes with 4GB/8GB LPDDR3 and 64GB of eMMC storage, the users can also choose for 128GB/256GB SSD storage option. The Surface Go runs Windows 10 S, a version of Windows that will only support apps that are available in the Windows app store.

Judging by price and size, it's clear that the new Surface Go is a direct competitor to the 9.7-inch 6th generation Apple iPad that retails for slightly less than Microsoft's tablet.

Microsoft is simultaneously competing with its rivals and striking out alone with the Surface Go. Now, the Surface Go is for serious work and casual consumer use.

The iPad starts at $329, but when you add an Apple Pencil and Logitech keyboard, the total zooms up to $527.95.

By lowering the entry level pricing of the Surface family to $399, this opens the door to more usage scenarios where I higher-powered device is not needed. Just don't expect to see Microsoft's zany folding dual-screen Surface Andromeda handheld - apparently, that project may be in danger now.

Surface Go is running Windows 10 Home in S mode (which you can turn off for free), though schools will be able to purchase the Surface Go with Windows 10 Pro via commercial channels for an extra $50. The Type Cover starts at $99 but will increase to $129 for anyone who wants "laptop-class typing", something that will apparently get them keys with around 1mm of physical travel. But through an ongoing series of product launches and acquisitions, Microsoft has been making its case to be the dark horse in the race. The detachable 2-in-1 tablet uses an optional Type Cover keyboard that costs $99.

Microsoft also promised an LTE-enabled version later in 2018. Underneath the hood is an Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor with either 4 or 8GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB of storage. There's nearly a Surface for everyone; ranging from the exquisite and incredibly expensive Microsoft Surface Studio to the luxurious, powerful and portable Surface Laptop, with all sorts of variations in between. The same connector can be used to dock the Go to an external monitor and charge it, while an additional USB-C port provides speedy data transfer and alternative power connections. But while the Surface Go is indeed pocketable, it only has one screen, meaning that this ain't it.

Low (er) cost 399 bucks Microsoft Surface tablet to be released July, Friday the 13th - 07/09/2018 05:50 PMAah Microsoft, you never had good fortune with the Surface, and now they will release a "budget" version this Friday, the 13th.
