Scott Pruitt resigns from EPA

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has resigned after months of ethics controversies, President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday.

"Sadly, I am concerned that Andrew Wheeler's background means that he will never understand that saving coal is not the job of the EPA", Market said.

Trump announced on Twitter that he had accepted Pruitt's resignation as EPA administrator, adding that EPA Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler will become the regulatory agency's acting chief on Monday.

"I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda", the president tweeted. We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!'

He had denied wrongdoing in the face of multiple congressional and oversight inquiries. He even told them to contact conservative groups and companies to find a lucrative job for his unemployed wife, including as a Chick-fil-A franchisee.

At the time, the president was feuding with Sessions over the AG's decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, according to CNN, which cited three people familiar with Pruitt's pitch. As Oklahoma's former attorney general, he waged a legal fight against environmental rules implemented by the agency he eventually would head.

He also ordered the installation of a secure telephone cabin in his Washington office at the cost of US$43,000 (S$58,700 euros) which critics found excessive.

Pruitt was one of the more politically ambitious administrators to run EPA.

Two Democratic lawmakers asked the EPA's inspector general on Thursday to investigate new allegations that Administrator Scott Pruitt falsified his official schedule to hide or remove records of meetings or discussions with industry representatives.

Pruitt is the latest Trump administration official to be bothered while dining out.

Trump said he had been discussing Pruitt's exit for a "little while".

It was also freakish given that the first week of Pruitt's planned trip would have been impacted by the shutdown.

Chris Horner, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute who has known Wheeler for years, told Breitbart News that he is up to the job, especially given his past work at the EPA.

His job had been in jeopardy since it emerged he had leased a property previous year that was co-owned by the wife of a veteran fossil fuels lobbyist, whose firm had sought regulatory rollbacks from the EPA.

He was confirmed by the Senate on February 17, 2017, on a 52-46 vote, the most recorded "no" votes of any EPA administrator.

Pruitt's departure follows those of former Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Pruitt's EPA proposed plans to eliminate programs created to protect children from lead paint. The person in charge of the EPA's FOIA staff, which has slow-walked and obstructed FOIA requests, is a political ally of Pruitt's and the former treasurer of his PAC.
