Netflix's 'smart downloads' cue up your next offline episode automatically

The team at Netflix agreed and today they are rolling out the Smart Downloads feature that makes it easier to watch the next episode of a supported TV show even if you are offline.

"Downloading today is a very manual process, and most of the time people will only download a couple episodes of a show at a time", Cameron Johnson, a director of product innovation at Netflix, said last week in a briefing. You watch, we do the work. The feature only turns on when you're connected to Wi-Fi to prevent cellular data usage charges.

We're not seeing Smart Downloads live in our most recent update of Netflix for Android, so stay tuned. For now, Smart Downloads will be Android-only and only includes items of the series variety.

If for some reason you don't want Netflix to do the deletion and downloading for you, Smart Downloads can be turned off.

Two years ago, Netflix launched their download feature and it was music to the ears of anyone that loves watching their favourite TV shows while travelling. This changed back in 2016, though, when the developers finally added the feature to their Android and iOS devices worldwide. So if you binged three episodes during a long plane ride, the app will delete all three and queue up the next three episodes for you.

If you do use it it's activated when you connect to wifi and are finished with an episode. It also only works with TV series - so it doesn't apply to movies, TV specials, or any other content.

New to Netflix this month is the latest season of Orange Is the New Black, a fresh batch of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Somebody Feed Phil: The Second Course, Shameless season 8, and more.
