LeBron returns to LA to plot next move as free agency nears

With LeBron, Kawhi, and possibly Paul George, the Lakers would gather tons of interest from vets just looking to win a ring, which already appears to be the case.

The video above (and shown below) is from NBA Weekly, a Facebook Live show. The betting favorite at the moment for James' landing spot is the Los Angeles Lakers with other teams like the Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Spurs also in the running. We break it down on NBA Weekly.

By declining his option, James positioned himself to be able to choose where he'll play next and Cleveland, his basketball home for 11 of the past 15 seasons, remains a strong possibility.

An NBA ownership group reportedly found that signing LeBron James could generate roughly $65 million for the franchise annually, according to ESPN's Ian Begley.

"It's going to be a two-summer thing for the Lakers", he told reporters Tuesday, referring to several all-star free agents being available next summer.

Following the Cavs' Game 4 loss in the Finals, James articulated what factors he will weigh with regard to his future. James is the most visible name in a free agent class that should include Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George and Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant, each of whom are expected to opt out of their contracts as well.

If James re-signs with the Cleveland Cavaliers, it will likely be for $205 million over five years, which is an average salary of $41 million. In fact, James might not even speak with top team officials before making a decision on his destination for next season.

Kanter, who had originally hoped to sign a long-term contract this summer, told ESPN in a phone interview he took out an insurance policy that will pay him $20 million if he suffers a career-threatening injury because he will be playing on a one-year deal.

WHY NOT: Flawed roster; blemished relationship with owner Dan Gilbert. If the Lakers can land another star, their chances of signing James are extremely high. The two are good friends and there's little doubt they would relish the opportunity to play together after competing against each other for years.

LeBron James will officially become a free agent on July 1. Days later, James was gone. While there was plenty of talk throughout the season about the prospect of James joining young stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons in Philadelphia, that talk has cooled in recent weeks. James taking the Lakers back to title contention might end all debate about him being the best player of all-time.
