Guardiola wants Man City stars rested and ready

City were reportedly angry with Napoli - the Manchester club feeling Jorginho was pushed to turn down the Etihad Stadium for Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder was Guardiola's top target for the centre of City's team, but the Spaniard has insisted he understands the 26-year-old's decision.

Guardiola's side will play Borussia Dortmund in their opening International Champions Cup match at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday.

"It would have been a mistake if he'd come here when he wanted to go to Maurizio and Chelsea".

'English football received an exceptional player at the end.

The plan for Gomes, outlined to him before he agreed to sign, has always been to keep him around the first team squad until at least January, and then decide from there the best course of action.

So far the tentative interest in Hart - who has 75 England caps, but was left out of the World Cup squad - has come from overseas clubs.

Hart spent last season on loan at West Ham, however, the former England number one is in the squad as he searches for a permanent move away.

Manager Pep Guardiola was not expecting any of his World Cup players to join up with the squad but has been boosted by the news that Mendy and Portugal worldwide Bernardo Silva will join the tour later next week. His situation is that he is here. "If not, he will stay here", Guardiola said.

The 31-year-old, previously England's first-choice goalkeeper, did not even make Gareth Southgate's 23-man World Cup squad, with Everton's Jordan Pickford earning rave reviews in Russian Federation in his place.

On Jorginho, Guardiola added: "I was disappointed (not to sign him)".

"Manchester City players and staff departed for the club's summer tour of the USA earlier (on Tuesday)", City confirmed on their official website.
