Apple celebrates World Emoji Day with over 70 new Emojis

These will be accompanied with a lobster, peacock, parrot, and other colorful animals in addition to new food options like lettuce, a mango, and a cupcake.

The 70 new emojis will be rolled out in a free software update later this year.

"As always, some of the most vocal requests for new emojis are about representation, and this update delivers some of the most common requests". Whether it's red hair, curly hair or grey hair, there will probably be an emoji with your hair type. Meanwhile, anyone who works in an over-air-conditioned office will appreciate the the freezing-cold face.

The new emojis will also be coming to (or may have already arrived on) other platforms as well, as they're part of the official Emoji 11.0 release. Popular emojis include faces representing various emotions, animals and love hearts. The interpretations can lead to controversy, such as Google's misplacement of foam on its beer emoji, and the tragic jumbling of ingredients on its hamburger emoji.

To embrace World Emoji Day, Apple has also changed the faces of its leadership team to emojis of themselves.

Since it's World Emoji Day, we thought we'd also take a quick look at the history of the characters and how they became such a hit.

To put all of this into perspective, the Unicode Consortium currently recognizes some 2,823 emoji, including pictograms for pretty much anything you can think of, such as the now-ubiquitous, almighty smiling pile of poo.
