United States, Mexico & Canada Bid Wins Vote For 2026 World Cup

United States, Mexico & Canada Bid Wins Vote For 2026 World Cup

The Associated Press reports that FIFA's member associations voted 134 to 65, with one no-vote, Wednesday in favour of the joint North American bid by Canada, the USA and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup men's soccer tournament over that of Morocco.

The intercontinental playoff will be held somewhere in the United States, Canada or Mexico, perhaps in November 2025.

A statement released by the Colorado Rapids, the Denver Sports Commission and the Stadium Management Company said Denver is among approximately 23 cities in consideration to host World Cup games eight years from now. Where, exactly, the World Cup will be played, and whether all three host nations will automatically qualify for the tournament.

"Hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a rare and important moment to demonstrate that we are all truly united through sport", said Carlos Cordeiro, president of U.S. Soccer and co-chair of the United Bid. "Football today is the only victor".

Mr Trump tweeted his approval on Wednesday in a rare show of unity with Canada and Mexico. "We tried very hard to get assurances and raised our concerns".

Morocco appeared too hazardous as a potential host when all 14 venues had to be built or renovated as part of a $16 billion investment in new infrastructure.

Brazil's Pele is the only player to win three World Cups: in 1958, 1962 and 1970. Julen Lopetegui, national coach of one of the hot favourites, Spain, was sacked on Wednesday for agreeing to join Real Madrid without telling his employers.

But it would be wrong to criticise this too readily as a basis for the decision, which England's FA voted for too, given that the Qatar vote was so ridiculed partly because the tiny Gulf emirate had no stadiums ready and has had to undertake a vast construction project.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was believed to have strongly backed North America behind the scenes because the trio of countries involved supported him in 2016 when he took over after the corruption-tainted reign of Sepp Blatter. Iran was the only country that did not back either.

The 48-team format will increase the number of games from 64 to 80 over 34 days. Local leaders Chiefs President Mark Donovan, Sporting Kansas City President and CEO Jake Reid, Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Mo., and Mayor David Alvey of Kansas City, Kan., are hosting a news conference, and may discuss the possibility that the Kansas City metro could host a match.

Members of Fifa's World Cup bid evaluation task force said she had an undeclared family link with Morocco 2026 bid ambassador El Hadji Diouf.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino on June 13.

Putin mentioned this while welcoming delegates from more than 200 countries at the FIFA Congress at Moscow's Expocentre. The experts had said the bids represented "two nearly opposite ends of the spectrum".

The United States won't play a match in the 2018 World Cup, but it will play host to a flurry of them within the next decade.
