Trump orders Pentagon to create US ‘Space Force’

Dubbing the new wing of America's fighting machine the "Space Force", Trump merged the idea of reasserting US might in space exploration with that of carving out military dominance, as worldwide jockeying for Earth's extra-atmospheric supremacy heats up. This allowed President Trump to stop by the meeting to sign a policy document on space-traffic management and also share a few thoughts.

But what does a new military service mean for military spouses?

Among the other issues the president is unlikely to have considered is just how the NRO, an intelligence organization that works very closely with the Air Force, will work with the new service.

He described the proposed new entity as a matter of national security that is meant to be "separate but equal" to the Air Force, which now has supremacy over the space domain.

"We must have American dominance in space", Trump said.

A space force is created to ensure friendly use of space and conduct of outer space operations, care after military training missions and space warfare or any combat that may occur in space.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 1947 created the Air Force.

The president mentioned the idea in May during a ceremony at the White House honoring the Army Black Knights college football team. "It is going to be something", he said later.

The move, which Mr. Trump tentatively endorsed three months ago despite strong objections from senior civilian and uniformed military leaders, is the culmination of extensive criticism on Capitol Hill of longstanding procurement and strategic lapses affecting the U.S.'s space programs. In the past two years it has led efforts to create a Space Corps, but the legislation was opposed by the Senate and by the Pentagon. However, critics have said the treaty has no enforcement mechanism, allowing the USA or other countries to militarize space. "Organizational changes don't fix all the problems". "We'll save a little money and they can beat us and we're taking full credit".

Trump stressed the new Space Force would be "separate but equal" from the Air Force, which now deals with military issues outside of the earth's atmosphere while NASA is in charge of civilian projects. The Air Force already maintains a Space Command, for example. "It is not too late to consider a more careful, thoughtful, conditions-based approach to assess if and when an autonomous military space armed force is the best path forward".
