Leimome Cheeks, 62, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly transporting her two grandchildren in pet kennels in the trunk of her vehicle.
The woman in the video was identified as the children's grandmother, 62-year-old Leimome Cheeks, who was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment in the case, Memphis Police Department announced.
Leimome Cheeks, 62, was charged with two counts of child endangerment after allegedly locking the two girls inside a pair of pet kennels.
A witness recorded the children being let out of the kennels outside of Elvis' Graceland Mansion on Saturday, and the video quickly went viral. According to an affidavit, Cheeks drove the kids from Whitehaven to Collierville, then to Downtown Memphis in 95 degree heat. "I couldn't see her actually doing that", said Skylarr Blake, who lives doors down from Cheeks. She seems like a nice lady.
The report also notes there were no air conditioning vents in the back of her SUV and that the children became hot.
They children also complained hat they were hot and cramped in the kennel, according to WREG.
The kennels apparently belonged to Cheeks' two puppies, neighbors reported.
According to Local Memphis, Nikita Blake, another of Cheeks' neighbours, added: "It's very sad".
Police have launched an official investigation into the incident.
Neighbors were shocked at news of the incident and said that Cheeks had just bought two German Shepherd puppies, which is why the kennels were in her auto.
Cheeks is scheduled to appear in court Monday, June 11. Police said the back of the auto did not have any air vents, according to the Commercial Appeal.
