Mbappe puts France responsibility on Griezmann's shoulders

A look at the Australians, sees them fresh from a 2-1 win over Hungary and a 4-0 victory over Czech Republic in their build-up to the World Cup.

France kicks off their World Cup on Saturday against Australia.

Griezmann stepped up and scored from the spot to put France in the lead.

He was alerted by the VAR to a possible penalty and went over to the pitchside monitor.

In 2010 in South Africa, Australia conceded two goals to Germany in the opening 26 minutes in their opening game.

But at the 11th hour, it seems van Marwijk has opted for Jedinak's experience of two previous World Cups in what will a hugely pressurised atmosphere against one of the favourites for the tournament. While the competition is not equal with France, no game is an easy win.

Umtiti made a clumsy mistake when he jumped to clear a ball with both arms raised and touched the ball with his hand to concede a penalty.

However, Griezmann has backed the 25-year-old to live up to expectations at the World Cup and produce match-winning performances as France aim to go all the way. But this game will largely be remembered for the introduction of technology and the debate that once again will spring up around its use.

French coach Didier Deschamps praised Australia's tactical organisation and the way it disrupted his highly regarded team, but also bemoaned France's lack of urgency. Neither of them had a fixed position. "We are a new generation that has just started blooming".

Raphael Varane (25) and Samuel Umtiti (24), who are expected to start at center-back, are both sensational, but may also be exhausted after going through lengthy campaigns with Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

In defensive midfield, the ever reliable N'Golo Kante is likely to be paired with Blaise Matuidi, but neither player is particularly forward minded, and if Pogba is no off form, they will struggle in combining defence with forwards.

The second half began in lacklustre fashion until Griezmann burst forward and earned the penalty when he was caught by Risdon's trailing leg.

Elsewhere, Dembele kept making the wrong choices and Mbappe looked like he was trying too hard to impress. Dembele played a corner and Griezmann played a corner. The gamble paid off, as Giroud had a direct impact by putting Pogba through for France's victor.

Australia may opt for a defensive combination, in which case they will probably have Tomi Juric in front.
