Ku’s Ball Room: Detroit Pistons hire Dwane Casey

Last month, he was named the Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coaches Association.

Detroit parted ways with head coach and president Stan Van Gundy in May.

The Raptors were the first seed in the Eastern Conference this year, finishing with a record of 59-23. "He embodies our culture and will be a great representative for our franchise".

The only coaching vacancy remaining belongs to the Toronto Raptors, and its their out-bound head coach filling the penultimate one.

Casey, who was sacked by the Toronto Raptors after a second-round playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers last month, was selected from a coaching pool that also included MI head coach John Beilein.

"After careful consideration, I have decided this is a very hard but necessary step the franchise must take", Ujiri said in a press release. With the offseason officially starting after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA Championship, it was time for the Pistons to pull the trigger. Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record. Promoted to associate head coach in November 2000, nine of his teams in Seattle finished above.500 with five winning 50 or more games. Toronto won four Atlantic Division titles during Casey's tenure. This past season, Detroit traded for All-Star forward Blake Griffin, who they are hoping to build their roster around alongside Andre Drummond. He also has experience in the league as an assistant with Dallas and Seattle.

A native of Morganfield, KY, Casey played collegiately at the University of Kentucky.

Casey earned a degree in business administration in 1979.
