Middleweight Gennady Golovkin has been stripped of his IBF title belt after failing to arrange a fight with a mandatory challenger.
Golovkin could go the distance in order with Derevyanchenko on may 5, however, the team champion is the mandatory title defense made a decision to hold a fight with Vanes Martirosyan (36-4-1, 21 KO's), who Golovkin knocked out in the second round.
It said in a statement that Golovkin asked in April not to fight Derevyanchenko because of his May 5 bout with Vanes Martirosyan. I can't understand why the IBF stripped of the title Golovkin is a big surprise for all of us.
Alvarez and Golovkin were set for a May 5 rematch after they previously fought to a draw, but the rematch was cancelled, which led to the latter fighting Martirosyan. The news comes after the IBF and representatives for both Golovkin and Derevyanchenko met on May 22 to discuss whether or not Golovkin could potentially move on to fighting someone else and still keep his IBF title. He would have had until August 3 to prepare for the fight, but the Uzbek star never agreed. Golovkin has failed to submit a written promise of a bout with Derevyanchenko on time, meaning he loses the belt he had held since October 2015 under Rule 5H of the IBF rules.
Negotiations between Loeffler and Alvarez's handlers at Golden Boy Promotions stalled two days later because Golovkin requested more money, a 50-50 split, than he accepted in the initial deal for their rematch.
"Gennady is disappointed in the ruling".
One of the main reasons Golovkin fought Martirosyan in the first place was because Canelo Alvarez tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended six months.
However, Loeffler said Golovkin is willing to drop his demands for an even split. The rematch with GGG is his biggest fight by far and Gennady's biggest fight. Realistically, GGG didn't want to fight Derevyanchenko on short notice.
