Apple Watch to get new Walkie-Talkie feature

Gamification has always been central to the Apple Watch tracking experience. That's not because of design - the watch's looks haven't changed much since its debut.

Notifications on the Apple Watch are getting more actionable, allowing you to do things like pay for a rideshare and rate the driver, directly from the notification.

Apple only mentioned this briefly, but it should come as good news to users in India - watchOS 5 will bring Hindi Localisation support, bringing system-wide support for the language.

Apple also revealed a new feature called Walkie-Talkie which allows users to send short voice memos to friends.

watchOS 5 will be out later this fall, hopefully with a new Apple Watch to go with it.

Another huge change coming in watchOS 5 is automatic workout tracking. Watch will also detect when you've ended your workout and suggest you stop it if you've forgotten. This helps if a user forgets to hit the End Workout button. Outdoor running can now track your rolling mile pace, and will alert you if you're falling behind your desired pace.

Both Yoga and Hiking are joining the 12 other activities within the Workouts app too. Siri Shortcuts are also going to be available on watchOS.

Walkie-Talkie is being added to let you send quick voice memos from person to person. If they accept it, you can then walkie-talkie them at any time.

Podcasts are coming to WatchOS as well. While you can already download and play music to the Watch, Apple will sync episodes from podcasts you're subscribed to to your watch, and the behind-the-scenes tech will let you listen to audio even while using other apps.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said on stage that Apple Watch sales grew 60% in 2017.

Watch notifications, which were once simple alerts relayed from your iPhone, will become significantly more useful in watchOS 5, especially in third-party apps. Student ID Cards With watchOS 5, Apple Watch replaces Student ID cards. Apple is partnering with a handful of universities, including Duke, Johns Hopkins and Temple University, to roll out that integration this fall.

Another new feature with Siri is that you no longer have to say "Hey, Siri". Third-party apps will be able to play background audio, you'll be able to customize the control center, you can add an air quality rating to your watch face, or add your student ID card to the watch.

Sales of the Apple Watch have continued to improve over the past two years, with the Series 3 model doubling sales of the Series 2, and enabling Apple to dominate the wearables category globally.
