Griezmann brace as Atleti win Europa League title

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has warned not to take Europa League opponents Marseille lightly in Wednesday's final.

Atleti boss Diego Simeone was confined to the stands after being handed a four-match ban for his antics on the sidelines during their semifinal first leg against Arsenal.

Of the six previous occasions that a Spanish team has reached the Europa League final, only one of them has not gone on to win - however, that came in 2011/12 when Athletic Club were beaten by fellow Spanish side Atlético (0-3).

Griezmann accepted that Atletico had been forced to work very hard by a Marseille side who started the game on the front foot.

However, the attack-minded French team had to pay for their own error.

The miss was followed by a costly miscontrol by Andre Zambo Anguissa which gifted Griezmann his first of the night on 21 minutes.

Atleti's Antoine Griezmann did this celebration after each of his two goals scored on Tuesday.

Any hope that Marseille might have had in forcing their way back in evaporated as the game went on - firstly with the first-half loss of Dimitri Payet, and then by going 2-0 down just four minutes into the second half. Second-half substitute Kostas Mitroglou rose highest to head a right-wing cross from Morgan Sanson, but the ball went onto Oblak's right-hand post. Captain Gabi capped off the victory with a fine finish in the last minute after being set up by Koke. He lifted up the trophy alongside Gabi on the award ceremony. They will receive €10.3 million in total for their run in the Europa League. "It made us realise what the team was capable of, and five months ago a lot of the players were being seriously questioned".

The comfortable lead allowed Atletico to take off Griezmann in the final moments and give veteran forward Fernando Torres a sendoff.

'If he leaves, I just want to let him know I love him'.

The dominance of Spanish team could be further underlined if Atletico's neighbors, Real Madrid, triumph against Liverpool in the final of the Champions League in Kiev on the 26th of May.

But nothing could disguise Atletico's vast superiority, as it added to the Europa League trophies from 2010 and 2012.
