So far, there have been 25 reported cases in Minnesota, 20 in Wisconsin, and 17 in NY since 2007, according to the CDC. Lyme disease is one of the most common illnesses a tick bite can infect humans with.
Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health is out in the community warning people to protect themselves and their children from a potential tick bite that could bring about the unsettling neurological disease.
"In some ways, what you should be concerned about when you're out and about is the tick, not necessarily the disease".
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that the best way to deal with a tick is to avoid them completely. "So far, Lyme disease is the disease that we have that the blacklegged ticks in our area carry". Significant education, prevention, and research can be accomplished if the CDC allocated part of the additional $900 million budget increase to immediately address tick-borne illnesses like Lyme, Babesea, Anaplasma, and others that have plagued Long Island. These funds will be directed to state and local departments of health.
Another disease that can accompany a mosquito bite is Zika Virus. However, if you do go into areas infested with ticks, they recommend you shower as soon as possible (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off any ticks that might be crawling on you.
Fleming noted Lone Star ticks have migrated from the south and their population continues to spread. Both ticks and mosquitoes can transmit various illnesses. "We also just got a report of a new species of tick, The Longhorn tick, which was found in Union County, New Jersey", she added. Clay says the blacklegged tick (or deer tick) is also becoming more prevalent.
"In Europe, the Lyme disease rash is more likely to look like a bull's-eye", Black said.
Spring has arrived, and with it so have blacklegged ticks, the vectors for a bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are crucial to recovery.
