Google Assistant now connects to over 5000 smart home devices

When it first launched, one of Google Assistant's biggest weak points was the number of smart home devices and services it could connect to.

Google said it now has connection compatibility with all major connected device manufacturers in the U.S. The smart home component hookup list, which is still growing, includes cameras, doorbells, locks, sensors, lights, power plugs, thermostats, security systems, and switches. Ikea offers some of the cheapest non-color smart bulbs that you can buy, which cost just a little more than a quality LED light bulb.

The current list of compatible appliances includes ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers, vacuums, fans, heaters, air conditioning units, and air purifiers. Entertainment queries and commandsincreased more than 400 percent in the last six months. But later this month, Google Assistant will also work with set top boxes and remotes, including Dish's Hopper line of receivers and Logitech's Harmony hub-based remotes.

The company's voice helper debuted at Google I/O 2016 and can now be found in Google's own smart speakers, as well as Android phones, and integrated with several third-party products.

That's a considerable increase over the past few months given the fact that it was only compatible with some 1,500 smart home devices in January this year.

All the Google Home integrations are wrapped up in the existing Explore page, so if you have smart stuff in your house and you'd prefer to control it with your voice rather than your smartphone, it's worth checking what's compatible. Just yesterday, the company announced that it's opening a new investment program for early-stage startups to help in broadening Google Assistant's features.
