Benitez warns Chelsea off bid for key £30m-rated Newcastle star

This season has seen Newcastle re-establish themselves in the top tier, and a win at home to Chelsea from Sunday's final fixture of the campaign should see them secure a top-half finish.

"From past year it is exactly the same thing. But I will just concentrate on trying to do well against Chelsea in what will be a tough game". Everyone has had to adapt their game, I have come on quite a lot as a player and captain.

But still without a call-up, and with Southgate's squad announced on Wednesday, Lascelles accepts the manager has his chosen defenders.

"We have a couple of players on loan who are leaving and a couple of players who have finished their contract as well (Jesus Gamez and Massadio Haidara), you need to sign players to be sure you have a good squad with competition".

"For me, the key has been the unity, togetherness between fans, players, staff, everyone, and the work-rate of this group of players".

Bernat has been second choice at Bayern Munich this season and it also remains to be seen whether Kenedy will look to move to Germany and risk sitting on the bench again or consider staying in the north east to benefit from playing regularly at St. James' Park.

And with discussions ongoing with Benitez and United hierarchy about his demands for next season, the former Liverpool boss stated he is unsure "how close we are".

"Jamaal has a great potential, but if you cannot compete, or you cannot keep the level of your team, then maybe you have to sell one player to be sure that you can bring in other players. The club have got to keep him happy".

"When people say "wheel and deal" - sometimes you have to do it because if not, you don't have the money".

Sam Allardyce's job is far from secure, but the Mirror claims Lascelles, who has impressed under Rafa Benitez as the Magpies secured survival after promotion past year, is now a prime target.

"As players we ultimately have to cross the white line and turn in a performance". Let us know by commenting below.
