Vatican arrests ex-diplomat in child sex abuse probe

He could not be reached for comment; the Vatican said he was being held in a cell in the Vatican's police barracks.

The Vatican statement said Capella, who was recalled from the Vatican embassy in Washington last August, was arrested according to articles of a 2013 law signed by Pope Francis. Carlo Alberto Capella and said he was arrested earlier on Saturday after a warrant was issued by the Holy See's chief magistrate at the end of an investigation.

Paragraph 3 deals with a criminal who "distributes, disseminates, transmits, imports, exports, offers or sells child pornography through any means, even electronically, as well as whoever posses child pornography for those purposes or otherwise distributes or disseminates knowledge of information directed at grooming or exploiting minors for sexual purposes". The investigation is continuing, police said. He was recalled from the U.S. a year ago.

"As a result of the child pornography recovered at his home, Joshua Janecka was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with five counts of Possession of Child Pornography and one count of Promotion of Child Pornography".

Police in Windsor, Ontario, said Capella allegedly uploaded child porn to a social networking site while visiting a place of worship from over the 2016 Christmas holiday. The Vatican did not identify the cleric, but Italian news media reports and an American official familiar with the investigation said it was Monsignor Capella.

The Diocese of London, Ont., confirmed that it helped investigators who had suspicions of "possible violations of child pornography laws by using a computer address at a local church".
