Additionally, Mrs Rawlings said that Winnie Mandela inspired and energised the black youth of South Africa to stand up against a system created to oppress them on their own land.

"When the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group sent Dame Nita Barrow [the former Governor-General of Barbados] into Soweto with Winnie in 1986 unknown to P.W.Botha, the apartheid president of South Africa - it was a Commonwealth and Caribbean expression of alliance with the struggle". After her then-husband Nelson Mandela was imprisoned in Robben Island in 1964, Alan Cowell at The New York Times reports that Madikizela-Mandela served as his spokesman and conduit during the next 27 years of his sentence as a political prisoner.

He went on to become president in 1994. The other, "Rise Up" celebrated Nelson Mandela's presidency.

Till date, known as the "Mother of the Nation (South Africa)" and dubbed a firebrand activist for her valiant fight against the apartheid state, Winnie never failed to criticise the ANC which has since remained South Africa's ruling party, whenever she felt things were done wrongly.

Political Analyst, Professor Sipho Seepe, says that although the struggle icon was "no angel" her contribution to ending apartheid is huge. "She was the last of the Titans".

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari described Mandela's death as "a huge loss to Africa", according to the twitter account of the Nigerian presidency. "We're fired up and we won't take no more", was known to be our slogan.

The People Democratic Party, South Africa Chairman, Hon Ekos Akpokabayen has commiserated with South Africa and the entire continent of Africa over the passing of Winnie Mandela on the 2 of April 2018. A firebrand with lots of courage, she bore the enormous suffering she was subjected to with equanimity to advance the cause of liberation of the blacks - South Africa's indigenous people and won unfeigned admiration.

The stadium is a short distance from Madikizela-Mandela's home in Orlando West.
